Health Care for the Mind and Body
For Artists and the Self-Employed
The Program includes
Why All Elected Officials should have an Art Therapist on their
Team and how Art Therapy aids in enhancing Mental Health and decreasing
violence.
And
Why Universal Health Care is not only Necessary but Possible
and why Denial of Health Care Today is Tantamount to Murder
Part 1 (of a 2 part program) will be held on Thursday, March
16, from 7:00 9:00 p.m. at the Lake Side Café, 1418
West Howard Street at Sheridan, in Rogers Park, Chicago.
Presenters include:
Sharon Hyson, Art Therapist / Educator /
Artist, and Founder, Art for Life, (sharonhyson@hotmail.com,
312-409-3258) creates art therapy programs and facilitates art
workshops for all ages and all populations, in health care, education,
and recreational settings. She has created and developed art programs
in shelters, psychiatric facilities, family camps, elder camps,
senior facilities, camps, schools, special education programs,
jails, rehabilitation hospitals, and community organizations.
She makes the arts accessible and has presented widely at conferences.
Sharon will lead an experiential workshop, Art from the
Inside / Art for Personal Growth, Art for Self-Empowerment,
in which she uses the Visual Arts as an integral part of life,
as a tool for wholeness, wellness, stress reduction and growth.
She will speak on why adding the arts enhances ones state
of health and why all elected officials should have an art therapist
available and on their team to offer art programs which will aid
in increasing the well being and mental health of the people in
the community.
Amona Buechler (info@lake-side-cafe.com)
@ owner of the Lake Side Café, www.Lake-Side-Cafe.com)
which has vegetarian, vegan and organic cuisine, will speak on
Inner and Outer wellness, well being, and health. The restaurant
and her massagetable business (www.bestmassagetable.com) represent
the Outer well being, and the non for profit I.M.U.
(Inner Metamorphosis University, www.Lifesurfing.com), which is
on the same premise as the restaurant, represents the Inner
well being. She will also speak about the art of sharing creativity
and passion, as it relates to the things she offers.
Arlene Rakoncay
(Arlenerakoncay@aol.com) is a founding member of the Chicago Artists
Coalition, a 31 year old service organization for visual artists.
She recently retired after nearly 30 years as the Executive Director
of CAC. Arlene will discuss CACs insurance plans and other
insurance alternatives as well as the state of health insurance
for self-employed people.
Lew Rosenbaum
(rosetree@mindspring.com) has been involved in the battle for
decent health care for 40 years, a bookseller for 30 years, board
member of the guild complex, and director of the Chicago Labor
and Arts Festival, now in its 10th year. Lew says, In
the 40 years since I became involved in the battle for decent
health care Ive seen two things happen. First, an increasing
corporate stranglehold in health care delivery and insurance has
turned our country into the laughingstock of the industrialized
world. Second, technological changes have transformed all corners
of our society to make it possible to guarantee every man, woman,
and child high quality care. Under these conditions, it is criminal
for artists to have to hold benefits to pay for basic care for
colleagues who cant get minimal insurance. Hell speak
about why universal health care is not only necessary but possible,
and why denial of health care today is tantamount to murder.
The program itself is free and open to the public. Come hungry
and buy yourself a delicious dinner, appetizer or dessert!
Sharon Hyson, Art for Life, Founder/Director,
Art Therapist / Educator / Artist, presents and facilitates this
months monthly gathering of the CTAC (Chicago Teaching Artists
Collective).
CTAC hosts a monthly series about arts education,
the teaching artist field, and community engagement through the
arts.
A talk, presentation, and experiential part will take place.

Sneak Preview of
The Celestine Prophecy
Thursday, April 6, 2006, 7:00 pm
Navy Pier Imax Theatre
700 E. Grand
Chicago, IL 60611

Film Description
Based on James Redfields
worldwide best-selling novel, The Celestine Prophecy
is a spiritual adventure film chronicling the discovery
of ancient scrolls in the rainforests of Peru. The prophecy
and its nine key insights predict a worldwide awakening,
arising within all religious traditions, that moves
humanity toward a deeper experience of spirituality.
The film features an international ensemble cast including
Matthew Settle, Thomas Kretschmann, Sarah Wayne Callies,
Annabeth Gish, Hector Elizondo, Joaquim de Almeida,
Jurgen Prochnow and Obba Babatundé.
Using an approach that
is part adventure tale, part parable, and imbued with
intriguing and exhilarating music, the film tells the
story of John Woodson (Mathew Settle), whose life is
at a crossroads. He is about to experience a dramatic
and profound metamorphosis. Through a mysterious set
of coincidences, he finds himself on an adventure to
Peru in search of ancient scrolls, known as the Celestine
Prophecy. Resistant at first, skeptical and unsure,
John finds that with every step he takes, each person
he encounters leads him to a new understanding. It is
only in this letting go to a higher consciousness that
he uncovers lifes true purpose and his own destiny...
Sharing/Talking/Exchange
about The Celestine Prophecy
free of charge, at the Lake Side
Cafe/I.M.U.
Share with other people your experience of the film The
Celestine Prophecy.
We encourage an open discussion:
What touched you the most in this film, positively or
negatively? How did the film inspire you? What could you
notice being provoked in you during the film? What remained
as an impression after the film?
Generally we tend to talk about films in an analytical
way, speculating what the intention of the film was or
why people behaved as they did. We tend to distance the
ourselves from the film in that way, as if it had little
to with our own lives. As we share our personal experiences,
we become more aware of what takes place inside of us.
And through this awareness we open to the transformative
possibility of this film.

Presents the 13th Annual Artists of the Wall Festival
This Years Mural Theme
June 17th & 18th
MUSIC and ENTERTAINMENT
From Noon until 5 pm
SUNDAY CONTEST JUDGING
It was noted many years ago that some people
liked using the Loyola Park break wall as a canvas.
Although interesting, the result was sometimes
a poor expression of community artistry. Most of the time one
artist would write over the words and images of the next.
Rogers Park is well known for its problem solving. Community
leaders put their heads together and have created one of the most
original contests ever -- The Artists of the Wall Festival.
Artists of all ages, skills and backgrounds will gather at Loyola
Park between Pratt and Morse Avenues on June 17th & 18th.
Sections of the wall are marked off and sold to anyone
and everyone who applies. Entry fees are $30 for a square. Application
forms are available for adults and children, up until the day
of the festivities. Adult artists bring their own supplies to
do their work; a special paint-tent is available for children
twelve and under.
Whether youre an artist or an art aficionado, come to
Loyola beach. The Artists of the Wall Festival not only contributes
to the yearly beautification of the break wall, but also bolsters
community activism and awareness. Residents of one of our most
culturally diverse neighborhoods come together for a special weekend
of celebration. They leave their mark on The Wall collectively
-- as one community!
In the Park at the beach north of Loyola
University access from Morse Ave.

Earth Day Festival April 21st 2007
Lake Side Cafe will have a booth at this festival
The Community for Alternative Sources of Energy (CASE) is a student run not-for-profit organization at Northside College Prep, the state's top ranked public high school. CASE is committed to decreasing dependency on fossil fuels by identifying and using practical alternative energy sources. CASE's goal is to make Northside an example of total sustainability and with the cooperation of the Chicago Public Schools, is currently in the process of installing solar thermal panels on the building's roof.
In celebration of Earth Day, CASE is holding their first annual Green Scene on Saturday, April 21, 2007 on Northside's grounds along the Chicago River (5501 N. Kedzie).
The indoor/outdoor festival is dedicated to raising community awareness about available eco-friendly practices. The fest is open to the public from 12-5 p.m. rain or shine. Admission is free. Ample parking is available for participants and guests. In addition to providing a showcase for area green organizations, the event's unique focus is to present environmentalism in a way that is accessible and demonstrable to visitors of all ages. The intent is to provide practical ideas that each visitor can integrate into everyday life.
The event features vendors, informational booths, and hands-on activities that highlight all the different aspects of leading an environmentally friendly life style, such as organic food, fair-trade products, green energy sources, and recycling and conservation programs. With the help of an experienced public relations team, CASE expects to heavily promote the event in local media. 10% of sale proceeds will benefit CASE. Informational booths should also provide an activity or demonstration to engage festival goers.
For additional information call (312) 952-6736 or email greensceneinfo@gmail.com. To learn more about CASE visit www.caseproject.org.
